Developing Driver is an instruction-oriented, non-competitive driving class. It is designed especially for drivers who are interested in learning about car control and dynamics in a safe, non-threatening format. Qualified Instructors are assigned to each student to discuss the program, demonstrate general car dynamics in laymen’s terms, and ride with the students in their cars.
Although Developing Driver classes are held in conjunction with Maverick Region competitive Autocross and Time Trial events so as to utilize laid courses and available Instructors, the Developing Driver class is solely focused on building new drivers’ confidence, enthusiasm and skill. There is no emphasis within this group on speed or time and there are no sub-class groupings. Impedes, when a car is forced to slow or stop by the car ahead, occasionally occur and solo competitive drivers receive a re-run of that lap. However, since the DD class is not concerned with competition times, they will not receive re-runs of impeded laps. All cars and drivers in the Developing Driver class are considered one class. Lap times are taken and posted for all drivers on the course. However, lap times are only applicable to those DD students considering a move into the Competitive Classes.
Developing Drivers interested in joining a competitive driving class can do so at any time. Additionally, experienced drivers may opt to join the DD class for a period of time as part of their learning process. However, they may only move between DD and Competitive Class once a year. This means that if a driver starts the year in DD, they may move into the Competitive Class at any time, but will not be allowed back in DD until the following year. Conversely, drivers starting the year in a competitive class and during the season opting to join the DD class may not move back to the competitive class until the following year.
No times are recorded for DD laps and thus can not be carried forward
if the driver opts to join a competitive class. However, you are allowed
to count DD event attendance toward end-of-year competitive class
point and award totals. Example: A driver begins the year in DD and attends
3 events. He/she then decides to enter a competitive class for the balance
of the season. If the driver enters the competitive class too late in the
season to qualify for the minimum number of required competitive events,
but has the required minimum number "in-toto" by combining attendance from
their DD and competitive events, they will qualify. Times from the DD event
will be scored as "Times not counted".
